Ascent Trip Report

Avoiding the Corona crap, we went socially distancing to the max and went primitive camping. Took my 4x4 truck on a hell of an adventure leaving the small town of La Cienega and not wanting to drive way up north and come into the national forest we just headed due west on county roads and forest roads and it was harder than it looked on the aerials. We took CR 56 up to 56c and headed on the dirt roads back to and down again south to FR24, and found a BLM land with one of those barb wire move it gates, and headed due west on a road that shows up on google aerial but not on the USGS map this road eventually climbs the Caja Del Rio Plateau and is not for cars or 2 wheel drive. My 4 wheel truck did fine in only 4 high but it needed clearance and was like most CO 14ers 4 wheel drive trails but with a lot of sharp angular volcanic basalt that I did not want to puncture my tires.

This 4 wheel drive down the plateau was not as bad and eventually connects with another forest road called out on the USGS map as FR24 and the driving was OK from here with a few twists and turns thru juniper lands and a few deep dips that once bottomed out my trailer hitch. The dirt road or trail shown off this road became my trailhead and I parked and Karen read a book while I bushwhacked the easy juniper terrain of class 1+ to 2 to the top and back about 2.3 miles RT and over 650 feet of total gain.
