Ascent Trip Report

The road to the trailhead is gated at Icicle Creek but only patchy snow coverage for just over half the distance to the trailhead. If you plan on bringing a snowmobile be ready to drive on dirt for about two miles. Getting around the gate seemed easy enough though. The last half of the road is completely snow covered but melting fast. Thin icy snow cover exists for the majority of the hike to Colchuck Lake and skinning up was feasible for most of the way. The lake itself is still frozen over and at the time we went not showing signs of instability. We were able to cross the lake directly to reach the base of the gully leading to Colchuck Glacier. The glacier is mostly sheltered by shade so the snow is still in great skiing condition, unlike the snow up to the lake. There was about 8-9" of fresh powder on top of more consolidated layers, mostly untouched. Heavy winds at the col and on the east ridge were contributing to some wind slab conditions and it was decided to leave skis at the col and boot up/down the summit. Fantastic skiing down the glacier and a bumpy ridge down from the lake.
