Ascent Trip ReportI parked off of Hwy 276 on land owned by SC Parks and Rec. There's a short, dirt road here I was planning on parking down but there was a cable across the entrance. I still had plenty of room to park outside of the gate. I started walking north on Hwy 276 and then headed left on an unnamed dirt road. This road enters more property owned by Parks and Rec. I never knew it, but there's a kiosk down this road and enough parking for 3 cars. The road is gated a short ways from Hwy 276 but this is a much better place to park. I went this way because I didn't want to walk on Hwy 276 any more than I had to and I didn't want to walk down Old Springfield Rd, making the neighborhood residents wary of my presence. Heading down into a basin, I crossed a couple creeks and up and across Old Springfield Rd. This wasn't a pleasant area...deadfall, rhodo and water. I just decided to walk the roads on the way back. Once across Old Springfield Rd there's a somewhat unpleasant bushwhack for the first 70 yards or so. After that it clears out pretty well and there are some old roads to follow. I'm not the only one who's gone this way. The rest of the hike is pretty straightforward on dirt roads. I didn't see anyone on this hike. I did see some vehicle tracks close to the Clear Creek area and further north for a ways. Hard for me to tell but I would guess the tracks were a couple weeks old. Stood on the summit of Quillen for a couple minutes. There's an SC/NC state line tag on a rock there, right at the edge of a clearing on private property.
