Ascent Trip Report

After a morning ascent of Merbabu.

Usually done by motorbike, road open from 0600-1700 according to Google, small (5000 Rph) fee payable.

The afternoon thunderstorm relents by 3pm allowing a ride up this interesting peak, a cone which has grown on the rim of a Pleistocene volcano. It's close to Kopeng my base for this morning's Merbabu ascent, but with no interest from Gojek or Grab drivers (the steep slow drive probably isn't economic at those rates), I engage a local with a motorbike to take me up. There's a road to the summit, but the lower part is rough and NOT pleasant on the back of a bike. But above, the surface is good. A car may be more comfortable, but note there are no passing places (but no cars either, this Sat pm.)

Summit is festooned with comms masts, but the highest ground (artificial but approx at natural highpoint) is a building, accessible with a food and drinks stall. Views not great in the conditions although the shapely Gunung Andong looks pretty good.

Telomoyo photos.

The thunder returns in the evening leaving me pleased with my 2 summit day.

Tomorrow back to Semarang then by train to Jakarta, due to fly next day to Malaysia to climb Korbu, but with a Coronavirus pandemic ongoing, we had to cancel our Malaysia plans. Instead an ascent of Karang.
