Ascent Trip Report

No, we weren't the only party on the mountain, although we were the only party on the summit when we were there. At the summit trail junction we saw a nice leather jacket laying on the trail that was left by some illegals in their haste to hide out as we approached. We became very wary of the situation, then Duane spotted a group hiding in the trees and brush. He greeted them in a friendly manner, to which they answered "Mehico, Mehico". We headed up the summit trail hoping that they would just stay put in their hide-out. Then while we were on the summit a border patrol helicopter showed up and started hovering around the area where we had seen the illegals. This seemed OK until one of us got a little paranoid and hoped that they all scattered in different directions, because we feared that they might take us hostage if they were still all together, could therefore overpower us if seen from the chopper. The pilot swooped low over us and let it be known that they saw us, so we screwed up our courage and headed down. Then when we could see the trailhead parking lot at Montezuma Pass we noted that there were a couple of border patrol vehicles there as well as ours, and hoped to have a chat with them when we arrived. Unfortunately, however, they were gone by the time we got there. A little more excitement than we had bargained on!
