Ascent Trip Report

Steep and fun, big elevation gain for the distance and long on views. Reminds me of Mt Pugh in the WA Cascades with a big switchbacky approach to a saddle and subsequent semi-exposed ridge traverse to the Pakituhi Hut turnoff. Trail is generally easy to follow; mostly solid dirt/rock but a few steep spots with loose gravel. It's really nothing harder than class 2, but there are a few places where you definitely wouldn't want to slip. Poles are a good idea for the descent. Do this on a clear day in good weather! 360 degree panorama of rugged peaks including the big guns, Mt Aspiring and Mt Cook, hundreds of smaller summits, and Lake Hawea 4000 feet below you.
