Ascent Trip ReportI wish I could say that this was intentional, but instead got turned around a bit, so the planned lollipop turned into a bit of a figure eight.
The plan was to take the orange trail to the blue trail (via the short connector trail) and then take the green trail up to Bailey Benchmark. Instead of heading uphill along the park road on the orange trail, I mistook the orange blazes for run-of-the-mill, "hey look at me, I'm a pole so don't hit me" reflectors. Thus, I set off along orange blazes on trees that I understood to be actual blazes and ended up heading downhill to Laurel Lake. After 5-10 minutes, I realized my error, and decided that rather than doing the full orange trail loop or heading back to the TH, I would cut over using a combination of an unpaved woods road to Spruce Lake and then the red trail back to orange trail.
From there, I proceeded as planned up to Bailey Benchmark and back down. If I would do this again, there is a parking lot near the end of the paved portion of the Mountain Lakes Road, maybe 100 yds before the blue connector trail departs the orange trail. Also note that though not on the park provided trail map, the blazed Green trail, which leads up to Bailey Benchmark, starts directly on the Blue trail prior to its intersection with the Orange trail.
