Ascent Trip Report

Arriving from the east down the Dry Cimarron Highway (Highway 456) having hiked up Black Mesa, Oklahoma earlier in the day we raced to fit in a late afternoon ascent of Capulin Volcano. In fact we needn't have driven so fast as we hadn't realised that we'd be changing time zones and thus gained an extra hour before entry was closed!

An easy anti-clockwise hike up and along the well maintained Crater Rim Trail from the parking lot to the summit and back with wide ranging views over the Raton-Clayton Volcanic Field. For some reason the vista reminded me of the East African plains, but with fewer wildebeest of course, much lusher than I'd imagined it would be.
