Ascent Trip Report

This county has 9 candidate high point areas and it took 2 visits to complete, all as per this TR. I have numbered the Areas in accordance with PB with the corresponding COHP.ORG numbers in parentheses, and visited them as listed below, starting with the most northerly one.
..................................................................................................................................

VISIT #1 DATED 2015-01-11 ..... successfully visited 8 Areas but not Area #2.

From Saluda County we went west on #23 to the Saluda/Edgefield County Line.
As was the case with the other counties, the high ground for all of the areas may be obvious but not "the" HP.

AREA 4(3) (33.84600,-81.77810)
At 150 yards west of the County Line is JW Yonce Road on the left (south) and on the right is the large Montgomery House sitting on the high ground north of the road.

AREA 5(4) (33.84381,-81.77677)
We drove Yonce Road south 200+ yards and parked, ahead at 50 yards is the RR Tracks.
The high ground is to the left (east) at 40 yards amid a peach orchard.

AREA 6(5) (33.84293,-81.77750)
We made an immediate right after the RR Tracks on a dirt track and went west 60 yards to the high ground.

AREA 1(6) (33.84550,-81.78172)
Went back to #23 and went west .25 miles to the first house driveway on the right, just past the large sign "Peach Capital of the World". We parked in his driveway.
The 52 year old gentleman, on his way to watch a football game with his brother, allowed me to walk his grounds. He's a big Cowboy fan.
I walked his backyard.

AREA 7(7) (33.84383,-81.78123)
The high ground is across the road (south) from our parking at Area 1, at 60 yards in a peach orchard.

AREA 8(8) (33.84566,-81.78818)
We continued on #23 for .3 miles to a right turn on Monument Road, .2 miles northwest we parked on the right, just past a power Line right-of-way. The high ground to the east requires some stomping.

AREA 9(9) (33.84200,-81.79139)
Went back to #23 and continued west for .25 miles to a large white house #1100 on the right. The HP is behind the house. A lot of cars around but no one home except for a mean-looking but really nice dog. I walked the area to my satisfaction.

AREA 2(2) (33.74814,-81.87144) .... unsuccessful.
We continued driving west on #23 through the town of Johnston to a T-Junction in the town Edgefield
where we turned left on #25 (Augusta Road) for 4.7 miles to a 4-WAY JCT - on the left is James Drive and on the right (west) is McDaniel Drive which leads to Area #3 per below.
From this 4-Way JCT it is .2 miles north to the driveway on the right, "BM#1247 Jackson Oaks". we drove the long driveway east to the stately house. Area #2 is 300 yds to the northwest.
We went to the big brick house and the house sitter told us that the owner will be back next week and she can not authorize entry.

AREA 3 (1) (33.74218,-81.87083)
We went back to the 4-WAY JCT and went southwest on McDaniel Drive (dirt) 250 yards to the fenced-in large Water Tank on the right. I walked around the east side of the fence to the beautiful open woods north of the fenced-in area, chose a spot close to the fence.

VISIT #2 DATED 2020-02-08 ..... successfully visited Area #2, thereby completing the county.
We returned to the stately house to be received by extremely warm/hospitable owners. They are aware of the high ground and had no problems with our presence.
I walked the 300 yds northwest to the fairly obvious HP at the north edge of the open woods. On route I walked through a junk yard.
Once back, Rose and I were invited in the house for a very long visit/historical chat with the couple, Betty and Clyde Jackson, their daughter/husband/grand daughter were also in he house. My take away is in point form.
1) The high school sweethearts, both went to Washington, 81 yr old Clyde was an X FBI Operative, Betty worked at the Pentagon. When he left the FBI J Edgar Hoover shook his hand.
2) Clyde say that the watershed from his 200 acre property goes off in 4 different directions. This property was originally a large peach orchard.
3) This stately house, originally built in 1835, was located near the Savannah River 40 miles away. He bought it through government bids and moved it to this location. He match-marked/disassembled the house and moved it piece-by-piece in a 45 day period, with the re-installation taking 5 years, made major upgrades.
Clyde did an amazing job documenting the work from start to finish, we looked through a thick photo album.
4) Clyde told us that there is a lot info in the net about the house, told us to look-up "Betty and Clyde Jackson 70 year old sweethearts".
Their contact info - Betty and Clyde Jackson, #1247 Augusta Road (Hwy#25), Edgefield, SC, phone #803-275-2664.
