Ascent Trip ReportBefore attempting this peak (and the nearby Raven Rock overlook) be sure to request an access permit from the Ohio DNR. For more information, visit the website here.
The trailhead is located at the far southwestern end of Malone Cox Road, near Riverside Park and Portsmouth West High School. There is room for parking two or three cars at the trailhead, but no more than that.
The trail was not overly difficult, though some muddy spots and a few tree blowdowns created some obstacles. The main attraction here is the Raven Rock overlook, which offers some great views of the Ohio River. My visit was during the evening, so the view east to the city of Portsmouth was nicely lit by the setting sun.
As for the peak, my assessment of the location of the highest ground matched my analysis from Ohio LiDAR data (OSIP 2007). It's alongside the trail, so there's no need for any bushwhacking. A large tree marks the spot. |
