Ascent Trip Report

Hale yea! Another 4K off the list

I needed something short today, which is why I picked Hale. In the winter you need to hike Zealand road to get to the trailhead, which adds 6 miles RT, but still this is the easiest 10mi hike you will ever get in the Whites because the 6miles on the road is flat. 25 degrees or so all day, overcast.

Thankfully didn’t need snowshoes for the road and going up Hale Brook Trail, there was 1-2 inches of new snow, but the trail was packed pretty well. Used some mountaineering boots and didn’t need snowshoes or spikes. Once on top of Hale i headed down Firewarden’s trail to hit Hale-Northwest. No one had hiked this all winter I believe as the only tracks were from a rabbit. I was post-holing 2feet until I donned my snowshoes. I did a quick summit of Hale-NW and headed back over Hale on down, using snowshoes for traction until the road. No views, but all WMNF hikes in the winter are beautiful

10.7 miles, 5:10 round trip
