Ascent Trip ReportThe day after Seweweekspoort Peak.
From NW, Du Toit's Kloof hut, route as per Mclellan description, 8h round trip, several passages of YDS3 scrambling. Bought CapeNature permit 55 Rand from Du Toit's Kloof Lodge nearby, opens 0700, bought on morning of ascent. Access to hut with kind assistance of the Mountain Club of SA hut keeper, who advises for this peak, to check MCSA online calendar for suitable meets and time visit accordingly.
Left hut 0745, path to road (cairned junctiion at S33.73882° E19.12615°), up road then L on jeep road, easiest to stay on jeep road in ascent, then an older road heads R towards pinnacle, climb scrubby slope to meet good footpath on ridge, rocky path intermittent as it passes R of pinnacle, climb to neck/col then cairned route leads up steep slope with several short passages of YDS3 scrambling, then continues reasonably well cairned, passing L of several obstacles, a more vegetated section harder to follow, then less vegetated less well marked steep climb up R, 2 short passages of YDS3 then fine scenic finish. Summit with mast, highpoint a slabby outcrop (S33.75416° E19.18813°, 1989m) 20m S of cylindrical metal cased trig pillar on plinth, a more slender trig a little farther on. Hot sunny day, superb rock scenery both sides of the N1 which can be heard for whole hike but doesn't detract. Up in 4h15, 15 mins at summit, 3h30 down.
Once back below the pinnacle I follow the good path on ridge until it reaches fence, then moderately unpleasant bush whack down to rejoin jeep road and back to the hut to cool off in the pool!
My target peaks done, but with unsufficient time for P1027m Sneeuberg (too far north) I spend my last 2 days climbing the main Cape peaks (having previously climbed Table Mountain). First is Swartkop. |
