Ascent Trip Report

Having arrived rather late the night before after an evening ascent of Le Catogne, I got about 4 hours broken sleep in the car before the cowbells woke me up. Oh well, it was forecast to be hot so an early start would be a good thing.

I set off on the normal route via the Refuge Grammaset where I found a few other hikers preparing to go. I was the first to arrive from the trailhead but shortly afterwards a couple of very lean blokes in fell running shoes sauntered past as if I was standing still.

The scramble up the corrie was most enjoyable, in contrast to my previous attempt when it was covered in old snow and rime ice (although that was also in August). Soon I was at the top in the early morning sun. With such an early start the entire route had been done in the shade, which was great. As I sat on top the views were tremendous, possibly the best viewpoint of Mont Blanc, even better than the Aiguille Rouges since you can appreciate the full scale of the thing over the low valley in between. It was already getting hot by 9.30am, at which point I headed back the way I came past a steady stream of ever sweatier slugabeds.

The Refuge did a pretty good grand cafe au lait and some wonderful Tarte. At the car I had a quick snooze in the shade before heading south to Grenoble to see about climbing Obiou the next day.
