Ascent Trip ReportJulie.M, Cal, Bonnie and I met at the Adirondak Loj and started our hike at 9AM. At the first intersection, it was 2.1 miles hike and we have quickly done with 50min or so. (Easy trail, very small up and down). Soon after, we lost Bonnie. Although we waited on the trail for more than 20min, she never came. Therefore, we assumed she headed back to the parking lot. She said she hasn't hiked 2 years or so and she has never hiked 15 miles distance. We were a bit surprised HOW COME she joined this challenging and infamous hike. Her choice to select hiking event was obviously wrong. Next landmark was at Scott's Lean-to which is about 4.0 mi from the trailhead. Then, 5.5 mi from the trailhead, there was another sign(trail juction?), then, we took toward to Ponds(Scott and Wallface) near the base of Mount MacNaughton. At this point, trail gets very muddy and we slowed down to avoid putting our foots into the mud. Just before we start bushwhack, we ate quick lunch at the pond shore. I recall we ate lunch around 1pm or so. Bushwhack at Mt MacNaughton took 3 hours 15-20 min for round trip. There were some thick areas for bushwhaking on the way to the top and steep section's ground were very soft and sometimes our feet made a big hole. From the summit, we could see limited nice view and sign of misspelled - McNaughton - instead of MacNaughton. We took several pictures but there was no rest area. So we headed out right away (We didn't even stay more than 20min). We took slightly different path to way down and we found beaver dam to cross Pond successfully. After passing Pond, we continued some more bushwhacking to get back to the maintained "Muddy" trail. Since MacNaugton is located very far from ADK Loj, it was a long day hike. It's about 15miles and it took about 11 hours to complete. My foot was a bit tired after the hike but we're succuessfully done. |
