Ascent Trip Report

Entered 12/29/2019.

This was the first overnight winter trip for our family in a few years, the last one being the hike to Bondcliff in February 2016, so this one mainly served as a shakedown to get ourselves reorganized and reaccustomed to working together as a group. While most tend to make this trip in one long day, we summited Owl's Head in three days. We left Lincoln Woods the 27th at 1PM and reached Black Pond by 4:30 and camped on a small ridge just to the west of the pond about 200 feet off the trail. It was raining steadily the whole way out so everything got a little wet. The next morning we got a late start around 11AM and took the Black Pond bushwhack to skip two river crossings, one across Franconia Brook and another across Lincoln Brook. The "bushwhack" was very well established and was much more like an unofficial trail or herd path. The "bushwhack" was about 1.5 miles and met the Lincoln Brook Trail just after it crossed the brook. We followed the Lincoln Brook trail another 2 miles to the junction of the Brutus bushwhack. There were three larger stream crossings but they were all easy and covered well with ice. The Brutus bushwhack is marked with two trees both with vertical gashes in them at eye level. There is supposedly also a tree with the letter "B" carved into it but I could not find it. We knew this was the correct trail though. We camped the second night 100 feet further down the trail between it and Lincoln Brook. The third day we started around 9AM and climbed the last bit to the summit of Owl's Head, leaving behind the tent and some other gear to pick up later. Similar to the Black Pond bushwhack, the Brutus bushwhack would be better described as a herd path. The top of the summit cairn just poked through the snow. We then climbed down to the campsite, picked up our gear, and hiked the 6 miles back to the Lincoln Woods parking lot. We finished at 5:15PM.
