Ascent Trip ReportAllt Y Main 356m
Allt Y Main is just north of the A495 near the village of Meifod which is itself a few miles north of Welshpool, Powys. I didn’t think this was going to be a great hike due to no obvious footpath for the last km but this turned out not to be the case.
Having parked on the A495, there is an obvious rough track/road on the other side of the road. Take this track into the forest until you get to the cottage at the end of it. A trail goes around this cottage and then loops round north and uphill. You eventually come out onto a forest road where you cross it and take a marked trail that again meanders its way uphill to the next forest track.
You then head left or west along this forest track. I was looking for any old path on the right that would take me out onto the mountain but was not hopeful as I had read that several hikers had just ended fighting through the forest onto the hillside. Therefore I was pleasantly surprised that after going around the corner to see a path that goes up into the forest which after a short while loops north to a style that takes you onto the hill…brilliant! Once out on the hill the views of the valley are great and the trig point soon becomes visible. Around twenty minutes more and you are at the top. Here there are nice views all round, a seat and plenty of peace and quiet.
To get back we retraced our route back to the forest track and headed off south and then east to make a bit of a loop of it. It wasn’t long before we got back to the van. To be honest if you follow my gpx track it is spot on for the whole route.
