Ascent Trip ReportWe signed up for Pym’s Paiya tours trip to Hagen, Giluwe, and Wilhelm. The service has been excellent, although the prices are what you would expect from a rich nation, not PNG. Everything is mind blowing expensive, except sweet potatoes.
There is a new trail on Giluwe that saves an hour or more each way. The paved road leading to it is generally excellent. It was 4h to the camp at 12k’, carrying UL backpacking gear. From there to the summit was under 2h at my dad-bod pace. There is a class 3 crux that had a rope attached for the LOLs. The whole climb could be done as a 8-12h dayhike if you aren’t concerned about the frequent afternoon storms.
The owner of the peak is Edward. ?+675 7105 2809?. Remove garbage. I am not sure if he has email, FB, or WhatsApp. It should be possible to arrange a climb through him directly; speaks reasonable English. That would save very large amounts of money. His head guide Stanley is strong and has adequate English. Most of the porters speak only bits of Pigeon. Logistics in PNG is tough so if money is not a top concern, definitely recommend Pym.
We tipped each of the 3 porters fifty Kina (usd15) and Stanley 100 Kina. We regret not bringing gear or swag for them, and trinkets for their kids. A pair of Scarpa boot’s was Stanley’s prized possession, donated from a Brazilian woman. When not guiding or carrying, these folks are subsistence farmers. Very kind people who work so hard on the trip.
