Ascent Trip Report

First in a multi peak loop hike in the Birkhead Wilderness.

DIRECTIONS: we turned onto Robbins Branch Road from Lassiter Mill Road and parked at the Robbins Branch Trailhead lot. Lots of hunters out here today.

From the trailhead ascend gently through an old jeep tract to an intersection with Hannah's Creek Trail. Turn left and continue ascending and then descending to reach the Thornburg Trail. Continue to the SE (right turn) and reach Robbins Creek. Trail then turns NE and you will cross the creek several times as you ascend to a gap between Brush Mountain and Cooler's Knob Mountain.

Turn East and ascend steeply to the top of the ridge and the intersection with the Birkhead Wilderness Trail. Proceed north along the ridge until you reach the intersection with the yellow blazed Camp Three Trail. Turn right and descend and then ascend to a gap just below Peak 957 (on the topo map). From here you are on your own as you head to the HP which is surrounded by massive amounts of deadfall. We ran into a woman who works with a local volunteer group. She explained that the landscape was a result of a microburst and a separate high wind storm last summer. Peak is among the deadfall where there is an obvious protruding rock. Little or no views.

Retrace your steps back to the Birkhead Wilderness trail (and the trail head), passing over Coolers Knob Mountain and a short side bushwhack to Brush Mountain - see my separate PB posts.
