Ascent Trip ReportWith too much snow further north I found myself heading south and Corkscrew seemed like a good peak for a filler day. Like a lot of the DPS peaks, it was selected for a reason. Namely, it's an impressive tower on the edge of the range with expansive views of Death Valley. Although not official, there is a pretty well-established trail all the way from the road to the summit.
My ascent was pretty quick. I parked at the first pullout, which turned out to be slightly too far east than ideal. I didn't find it on the way up, but there is a cairned use trail that goes pretty much all the way to where I parked. Anyway, after a little bit of cross country travel, I found a use trail, which quickly merged with an even more heavily trod trail. There were so many cairns, that it would have been hard to lose it. After following a wash for a while, it ascends the ridge and climbs aggressively to the summit.
I was a little surprised to meet other people on the mountain, but it turns out that the hike is pretty popular. I enjoyed the summit for a few minutes and made a rapid descent to get back to town and charge my stuff. |
