Ascent Trip Report

This trip started from the top of neighboring Garfield Peak, and was the last of five Oregon T100 peaks around Crater Lake that we topped on our two-day blitz.

We decided to approach along Castle Crest, so we followed the south ridge down Garfield and then traversed across an open country stretch to the base of Applegate. There was some easy scrambling (mainly big rocks and small trees) just below what we originally thought was the summit, and the location of the benchmark. After taking a few minute break at the benchmark, we became reasonably sure that the true summit rock was actually a few dozen feet to the west. Owing to the massive, rotten-rock exposure down to the lake, we cautiously picked our way around some scrub trees and out along a decent ledge to tag the rock with our poles. Had there been better rock or a ten-foot exposure I would have scampered out and up without thinking twice, but a 2000' high dive into the lake wasn't particularly appealing. Use caution!

We returned the way we came, often wondering why there wasn't a trail along our route. The ascent of Garfield's south ridge seemed much longer than the descent, but that's probably just due to my general aversion to elevation gain on the return trip. We were only about 50' below Garfield's summit when we regained the trail, so we decided to tag the top again before heading back to the vehicle. It's ironic that the peak we didn't originally intend to climb ended up being the only one we did twice.
