Ascent Trip ReportThis was an SB6K Challenge hike. We used hike #237, and the gpx file, from the Carolina Mountain Club to hike/summit Waterrock Knob, Browning Knob (not part of the SB6K Challenge, Mount Lyn Lowry, Plott Balsam, and then Yellow Face on the south side of the original trailhead and Blue Ridge Parkway. I thought this relatively short hike was hard, primarily to the steep nature of the trail. Particularly steep is the north side of Mount Lyn Lowry, used to traverse the distance between Lyn Lowry and Plott Balsam. Also someone (I assume maintainers of the Lyn Lowry tower site) cut down a huge balsam tree that was near the start of the trail that leads north down the ridge toward Plott Balsam. None of the tree debris has been removed or cut into smaller pieces. This made locating the start of the "faint" trail more difficult, but not impossible. Just be aware of this. The bushwhack up Plott Balsam it relatively easy. Even if you miss or lose the faint herd path the ridge to the summit is distinct and easy to follow. Nothing to see on Plott Balsam's summit. There is a "bald" about half way between Lyn Lowry and Plott Balsam, that you can easily see from the top of Lyn Lowry, that makes a good spot to stop for lunch. Most of this summit hike opens to absolutely incredible views and I highly recommend it.
