Ascent Trip Report

After a brief hiatus, we resumed our annual Logan Peak/Dry Canyon hike with yet another route. This time we took the ridge that runs between Dry Canyon and Logan Canyon, which was a different adventure. There was a bit of scrambling in some parts, and definitely some intensely steep slopes. There was one large buttress that we probably could have circumvented, but we decided to climb it because it looked fun. It may have been class 4, because there was some exposure (about 150 feet), and we were climbing up a series of 20 foot chimneys. It was cool. The ridge was slow going, but it was something new. We had some nice views of Logan Canyon and the cliffs on the south side of Saddleback. Around 9000 feet we hit pretty thick fog and there was snow on the ground. That slowed us down even more. The snow was a mix of hard crust and crystal dust. Wasn't the most pleasant, but it wasn't the worst either. There were no views on the top. It was windy and cold. We made a hasty retreat toward Providence Peak and went down Providence Canyon. The canyon was really nice. There was a lot of snow along the road, and for the last half mile above the quarry there was a solid river of ice covering the road. It would have been fun to see some UTVs trying to get up that. I know people try it, because some people in side by sides are willing to try anything. The waterfall at the quarry was excellent. We took the trail down to the mouth of the canyon, and it was a lot of fun running. We then took the BST back up to Dry Canyon, where the car was parked. It was a pretty good day.
