Ascent Trip ReportWe drove a basic half ton pickup with 4-wheel-drive to the high saddle in the South Fork of Ophir Canyon. The going was rutted and rough, but with good tire placement I only touched the underside of the vehicle on ground a couple of times.
The route up started on trail, then at the saddle just above 9000' we opted to follow the ridgeline directly to Lewiston Peak. The route was rugged, but easy enough to navigate. Thorn bushes and a little on ground snow made things interesting in a few places.
The high ridgeline from Lewiston Peak to Flat Top Mountain was easy to follow, but more rugged than I had expected from afar. Boulder hopping, etc. slowed us some, but it was easily managed. The summit of Flat Top Mountain was grassy and, well, flat. The entire Wasatch Range was visible from Gunsight Peak north of the Wellsville Mountains all the way down south to Mount Nebo. The view of Deseret Peak to the west as well as the desert and Wasatch Front Urban Area was quite fascinating. With absolutely no wind and a beautiful warm fall day, it was hard to leave such a calm, beautiful place.
We did reach out to the property owners prior to the trip, requesting permission to cross onto their private land. They were very gracious and let us do so.
