Ascent Trip Report

When we planned this trip from the west coast, we didn't realize that just about everything closes on the third Sunday in October. While we wanted to climb the peak, we didn't have crampons or spikes so it wouldn't have been safe. The cog railway was said to be closed, although it did go up most of the way when we were there. The auto road was closed to all except tour vans. The day before, we got two tickets for the last van of the day on Sunday, the last day of the season. The morning tour did not go to the summit because they were working on the road. Our van made it to the top, so we got this peak in spite of all the obstacles. There were hardly any people there, it was covered with rime ice several inches long, and the wind was blowing but not too badly. The museum was still open. The views were good even though there were heavy clouds to the west where we could see rain against the orange sky where the sun had yet to go down. I'd rather climb than ride, but with an impending knee replacement in our family, it was best not to push our luck. Stats include walking around the summit area and also at the base while waiting for the ride.
