Ascent Trip ReportHiked up Polecat ski trail starting at 4:15 am with John Pike & Priscilla. Cowboay camped by the powerlines at Carter-Moriah Trailhead in Gorham. Met there in the morning. I set alarm for 3:00 am but woke up wide awake at 2:00. Heated water for coffee and instant breakfast in the morning.
Spotted cars (Dropped Priscilla's at Imp, she didn't need Moriah for Grid.
Hike up ski trail to Wildcat D. Steady ascent and some ice but mostly frosty grass and rough road/path. I set the pace going up. Priscilla used my wool mittens- I just woren fingerless wool gloves. Saw amazing clear dawn from Wildcat A. Sun rose while we descended to Carter Notch. When we got to Hight we saw sun reflecting on water, thought it was lakes in Maine, actually Atlantic Ocean/Gulf of Maine. Incredible views all around. We tried to pick out Cabot & Waumbek. Think we found them- ridge looks long even from a distance. Picked out Horn & Bulge and Starr King.
Interesting how the perspective on the N Presidentials changes from Hight to Moriah.
Priscilla dropped off after Middle Carter down Imp.
Descent from North Carter was rough as expected.
Very icy the whole time but still and clear. Could have used spikes at many points but there was always enough bare rock to find a way. Some descents totally sketchy though. Super thick ice flows and lots of frozen over mud puddles that were easy to pick a way across.
Amazing traverse, although my knees were feeling pretty rough coming down the slabs from Moriah. Finished at about 4:00 pm. Drove in John's van back to my car at Wildcat. Ate a bunch of McDonald's, back at Notch Hostel. John & Priscilla are hiking Carrigain tomorrow.
