Ascent of Brown Mountain on 2019-09-24
|Date:||Tuesday, September 24, 2019|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||7340 ft / 2237 m|
Ascent Trip ReportI found the parking spot on the east side of the mountain that was described in Summit Post, hiked a short distance up FSR 3640 and took the short connector trail to the Brown Mountain Trail, a trail that encircles the mountain. I hiked a short distance north and spotted orange flagging. Thinking that the flagging marked a good cross-country route to the summit, I followed the occasional flags up and west. Soon I reached a lava talus slope and discovered the route markings were rock cairns. But I quickly deduced that the flags and cairns were not marking a route, rather they likely marked the forest boundary between Winema NF (north) and Rogue River NF (south). This boundary is shown on the topo map. I lost the markings when the slope began to steepen above about 6400’. That was also about where the lava talus slopes ended and the hiking became much more pleasant. I thought my route up was not terrible and I tried to return the same way. I lost the exact route and forged a different route that was further north from my ascent route. My descent route was much more difficult than my ascent route. I encountered more lava talus and my knees did not appreciate that. I tried to veer south to return to my ascent route and only relocated the flagging just above the Brown Mountain Trail. My overall average speed on this climb was a robust 1.1 mph. Afterwards I drove to the nearby Lake of the Woods Resort and ate a medium pizza and a large serving of ice cream for lunch.
