Ascent Trip ReportPart of a Jagged Globe/Andeanface trip to the mountains of Ecuador. A rewarding mixture of rocky and glaciated peaks in this beautiful and friendly country.
The pair of contrasting Iliniza volcanoes are a popular destination. Iliniza Norte was to be one of our acclimatisation rocky ascents and started with a 5 km walk-in to the Virgen Camp from the end of the 2WD-passable road in the valley. Heavy rain overnight tested the integrity of our tents but the following day was clear and we made an early start. All was well up to the hut at 4,700 m (Refugio Nuevos Horizontes). However, worsening weather with thunder, a hailstorm and evidence of recent avalanches forced us to turn back just over half-way up the ridge. A great shame as we were all making good progress up to that point but better safe than sorry! |
