Ascent Trip ReportI'm entering this TR primarily to advice others of the poor road conditions from a south side approach. I came here with Kenith Threatte's driving directions and I knew as soon as I started up Grassy Gap Road that I wouldn't make it. The details follow.
I found my way to the square in the center of Dahlonega, then went east 2 blocks to the JCT East Main/North Grove Streets at the stop light, I zeroed my odo.
0.00M ... JCT E Main/N Grove (34.53376,-83.98339), I went north on North Grove Street (paved).
2.17M ... Turned left on Camp Wahsega Road.
3.00M ... Turned right on Black Mountain Road (still pavement).
6.52M ... Turned left On Grassy Gap Road at a wide intersection (elev 1650') - the road is narrow and gravel, and I knew that I wouldn't make it as I immediately came to a huge rut. I gingerly continued up the road.
7.90M ... decided to turn around (34.62069,-84.01592, elev 1970' ). The road is extremely bad (huge ruts/rocks) - I actually should have stopped earlier. I have a dodge caravan and ONE NEEDS "high clearance".
I thought against hoofing-it the rest of the way (its an estimated 2.7 miles north to the gap then another 1 mile west followed by a 300 yd bushwhack). I'll leave this Triple Divide for another time (maybe) and if I do come back I'll try driving to Gooch Gap from the north and see what that produces. It looks-as-if this approach makes for a much shorted hike.
