Ascent Trip Report

Entered 10/19/2019.

Tom was the last and loftiest peak of our hike, starting in Northampton and following the ridge in Mt. Tom State Park. A group of paragliders was preparing to jump off the cliffs on the west side of Tom. We watched for about an hour, one of them jumping right before we left. A crew was also performing maintenance on one of the many towers at the summit. Sadly the facilities are worn out and are quite unattractive. There's an excessive amount of graffiti-laden, crumbling concrete. It's too bad because otherwise, it's such a nice spot. On the way down we ran into a group of hikers who got together as strangers over a meetup app. They were very friendly and joined them on the descent to Route 141. We left them at the trailhead and walked to University apartments on Jarvis Ave., where we picked up the bus back to Northampton. Overall, a very successful, enjoyable hike. Total mileage was just under 13 miles.
