Ascent Trip ReportI was told this is called "Ashokan High Point" and the site of a former firer tower...and to follow blue markers to do either out and back or a loop, which would be about 10 miles. Parked at Kanape Brook trailhead. Figured out to cross the road and go downhill a bit to the bridge and that there are no blue markers. They are red. The first 2 miles or so are a very gradual up, barely notice any elevation. Markers will follow the steep route, not indicating the loop option. It is at a junction just past the sign saying "Trail" with an arrow and one on a tree saying no motor vehicles covered with light fencing. There is a Y if you watch for it. Red markers leading to the right take you the steep way (also the prettiest). The trail to the left is a longer but less steep route that is obviously not used as much and you'll find yourself pushing some bushes out of the way (not too bad, though). So, went to the right (missing that Y finding it on the way back). Came to the view and found the first reference marker for Samson Mountain. Hmmm...not called Ashokan? Found some hardware from the removed fire tower and the second reference marker, but not the summit marker. Did some research later and found that Samson is a smaller peak 6 miles west (maybe the summit marker was moved??). Other hikers were returning the via the same path, not taking the loop. I followed the loop. It was longer but a much gentler descent; red markers.
