Ascent Trip ReportHiked up the Spruce Mountain trail to the turn to Backcountry Site 42. From there the now-decomissioned Polls Gap trail heads southwest along the ridge. There are actually two old trails on the ridge, the one marked "bridle trail" on the USGS map runs the ridgeline and the old Polls Gap trail traverses the eastern flank just below the ridgeline. I chose to go up on the old bridle trail. The going was slow with many downed trees. Located the summit without problem. The unknown peakbagger who leaves small American flags had been here.
On the way down I stumbled upon the old Polls Gap trail and followed it down, and the going, despite a few blowdowns that had to be negotiated, was much smoother. I'd recommend this route rather than slogging along on the top of the ridge.
