Ascent Trip ReportTook the Blue Ridge Parkway to mile marker 300 to the Boone Fork Overlook. We accessed the Tanawha Trail at the far left (south) corner of the parking area and walked south on that trail for about a third of a mile, and then turned right and uphill onto the Daniel Boone Scout Trail. (We passed the Nuwati Trail before the DBS Trail). It's about 3 miles to the top and it's a pretty stout hike. Near the top we went up a series of ladders to a peak with a great view...but it's not yet Calloway Peak. We kept going about another quarter mile to get to Calloway Peak. We did not miss the great view spots "Flat Rock" and "Viaduct" on the way up, but we passed on the remains of an airplane crash in 1978 on the right of the trail just shy of the series of ladders near the top.
The hike itself as I had plotted it is about 3 miles (4.8 km) with over 2000 feet (614 meters) of elevation gain. Our GPX track with our various detours and forays was close to 6 km.
We started out early but took our time taking photos at the various opportunities on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We reached the trail head about 30 minutes before noon. We reached the summit after about 2 hours and 45 minutes of hiking making plenty of stops along the way for taking photos.
My son accompanied me on the hike. This was more strenuous than the one he had previously done with me (Standing Indian).
At about half past 4 pm we set out to leave the summit the way we cam on the Daniel Boone Scout Trail. Despite our fatigue, we tried to pick up the pace as we were running out of daylight. We eventually made it back to the trail head with the last quarter mile in complete darkness. I had enough battery power in my phone to use it as our flashlight.
