Ascent Trip Report

We drove in from the High Rock junction to the saddle west of peak 4822, which had a few tent sites and a wide enough place to park and turn around. We set out to the west along the dirt road and found a rough, unmaintained trail leading up the ridge toward the buttes. The trail came and went (largely the 'went'), and there were a number of pink ribbons along the way. It appeared to me that a route had been marked, possibly for a future trail.

In any event, the route of ascent is fairly obvious (if thickly vegetated in parts) along the ridge. Turning north at the minor summit is really the only potential for mix-up provided one has a good sense of direction, compass, or both. We had a better success following the ribbons on the return.

The slope leading up to the summit is largely a bare talus field, and the top affords views of many of the 'local' stratovolcanoes. We were able to make out peaks from Adams to beyond Jefferson. There is a rock windbreak up there that Krystal plopped down in to rest. I took out the monocular to differentiate between the peaks to the south. The north peak appears to be the same height as the south using my rough sighting with the clinometer on my compass; the USGS has the south peak at 24' higher. There are some cool rock 'teeth' along the ridge bewtween the two summits.

I think that this peak is the high point of the recently formed Roaring River Wilderness.
