Ascent Trip ReportFrom the junction of Hwy H and the signed road to Peck Ranch to 3.5 miles east to the Stegall Mtn. turn off. Go straight ahead another 2.0 miles to the Ozark Trail Parking Lot. If the gate is open turn north and go 2.7 miles north to a hard to notice turn going north. If you are bold you can turn north and go a bit further. lat-long = N 37° 5.070' W 91° 9.766'. I parked here.
Go north about 1700 feet to a fork labeled on the left 'Trillium Trail' and 'No ATVs'. Turn left. If you are quite bold you can take a 4WD another 0.4 miles, and if you are very bold you can take it all the way. The trail passes within view of and a short hike from the 1359' top of Thorny Mtn., recognizable on the right (east) by a large flat exposed rock, with several smaller boulders on top of it, past one or two smaller flat exposed rocks.
Compared to the other trip reports, this route up Thorny Mtn. seems a little longer, but has less gain and less potential 'No Trespassing' hassles.
On Oct 1st I went and got the last of the Shannon MO county HP areas, not in the peakbagger database, cohp.org area #4 the northeastern most one. I had to start from the bottom road, near N 37° 24.716' W 91° 11.661' wherever you can find parking. I hiked up about 220', northeast about 1800', all bushwhack. I stood at the west edge of the 1340' closed contour, N 37° 24.853' W 91° 11.343' and tried to estimate how high the highest ground at ~ N 37° 24.854 W 91°11.300 was above me. I estimate 5 to 6'. If my estimate of the 1340' contour was wrong it would still be less than 10' and much less than 19'. Up took 25 minutes max, down 35 minutes, because getting the direction down right is harder than up. Driving away I noticed an overgrown ATV track at N 37° 24.721' W 91° 11.656'. You can venture whether it is any easier. Also driving out I verified that the side forest road, 2824, forking at N 37° 26.036' W 91° 11.751', providing access from the north, is poor quality and gated at the fork.
