Ascent Trip ReportFrom WNW, Makinoto Pass, popular trailhead, good route, well defined, rubbly in places, some easy scrambling, near start and on Hossho.
From parking area (Lat 33.096 Lon 131.208, 1330m, toilets, refreshments), trail is a concrete walkway passing a GPS antenna (there's another at the Hossho key col, possibly part of volcano monitoring network), visiting 2 viewpoints, then a rocky minor top with scrambling, short ladders and cut footholds (YDS2+). Easy trail then ascent to fork, turn L.
Soon reach another fork, R for Nakadake/Kuju but I fork L for Hossho, trail a little overgrown, a single YDS3 move with small toe hold and rope. Summit quite busy. Highpoint is an outcrop (Lat 33.09084 Lon 131.23281) just W of marker post, overlooking a smoking crater to NE. Ridge continues SE, YDS3 scrambling in places.
Rejoining main path, ascend broad stony ridge to a fork. Kuju is up to R; strikingly the 1652m spot height is a hole (old vegetated crater) not a summit; I turn L and follow the path which skirts R of a crater lake then swings L then R and climbs Nakadake, a little YDS2+ near summit, which is quite busy. Highpoint is boulder (Lat 33.08595 Lon 131.24910) 2m S of marker post.
I descend SSE, resisting temptation to climb 1774m Inaboshi (Pete is ahead of me having omitted Hossho), and take the rope-marked trail WSW for Kuju, near the summit passing a small vegetated cairned top, a cairn on a boulder which has somehow got itself onto Peak bagger, then Kuju summit, highpoint a boulder (Lat 33.08213 Lon 131.24090) 2m S of trig block and marker post. Intermittent views of Nakadake and Inaboshi.
Straightforward descent, round trip a little over 4h for the 3 summits, Kyushu island HP and the 11th ultra of our trip. North now, our next peak Kisokomagatake.
