Ascent Trip Report

Entered 9/22/2019.

My first overnight trip with UMOC and first 4000 footer in Vermont! We drove in Kieto's car from the gear locker to the trailhead. Took about 2.5 hours. We parked at Brewer's Corner and hiked 3.5 miles to the Cooper Shelter. We planned on sleeping in the shelter but there were many people already in there. We could have squeezed in but the guy we woke up was low key kicking us out. So we slept on some tent platforms a hundred feet further. It ended up not being too windy or cold. We left the trailhead at 10PM and arrived at the shelter by 12:15AM. We got about five hours of sleep, waking up at 6:00. We hiked the last quarter mile up some steep sections to reach the summit. We watched the sunrise from the cement foundation of the radio tower. Very awesome. I'm pretty sure this is also my first sunrise hike. Low clouds laid in the valleys. We could see far but fog obscured some views toward the west (we could just barely see the Adirondacks). We ate breakfast as the sun rose higher on the summit. Three parties of one joined us. The rocks on the summit were relatively flat and covered in graffiti, the oldest date I could find was 1873 (the newest 1914). We then hiked down at a pretty fast pace and returned to campus at noon. Now, sadly, I've got homework to do.
