Ascent Trip Report

A perfect, summer-like day in mid September! We took the Jewell Trail up from the Ammonoosuc Trailhead. We had descended this trail before coming from Washington. Definitely the least exciting but easiest trail on Washington. The alpine zone was warm and sunny today, with barely a breeze! Fantastic clear views to the horizon. We hiked a counterclockwise loop over Mt. Clay. It felt like red-lining because the trail system is clearly not designed for people who want to hike only Mt. Clay. From the top of the Jewell Trail, the south summit of Clay is 250 feet away, and yet to get there on Gulfside Trail and Mt. Clay Loop, you must walk 0.7 miles! The other side of the loop is just as bad; you must descend over 500 feet toward Sphinx Col, then climb back up 400 to return to the junction with Jewell Trail! Fortunately, most of this ridiculous setup is pleasant to walk. The views of the Great Gulf are astounding. Mt. Clay seems to be seldom visited, and it's as nice a spot as any on the Northern Presidentials.
