Ascent Trip ReportA few years ago I skipped Lassen because of smoke from fires... and some laziness.
This time I crawled up the 45 or so switchbacks, amongst dozens of other people. The parking lot was near full when I arrived at 11:30.
Nice views along the way. And even Shasta in the distance once I made it to the top ridge. (Fwiw, once the trees end, you're about halfway in terms of distance and altitude gain.)
The snow pack at the ridge was about 100 ft wide. Then came the final summit pyramid. It had a use trail, but not an enjoyable one. Too much traffic. Too many people resting on boulders, blocking the trail. Think mini Everest...
On the bright side I got to touch the top itself, although the marker was missing, and only drill holes were left.
However, a marker disk was present a few feet to the side and ca. 2-3 ft below, on a neighboring rock pinnacle. The disk wasn't in great shape. Draped over the rock rather than flat. But still readable.
I then descended the summit pyramid again, and went on a side quest for the northern ridge with the wilderness HP. See separate trip report there.
Last but not least, I descended the switchbacks.
All in all about six hours. Ascend was 2 h 20 min or so -- I'm slow, as always.
I concluded the day by driving back home to the Bay Area. Saved a road-crossing deer on the way, by virtue of my car's really big CCB rotors... phew!
