My first hike with the UMass Outing Club (UMOC)! I got to see the gear locker for the first time and meet some of the managers including Kieto who was a member of Outdoor Pursuits a few years back. It was supposed to be a sunset hike but we got a late start so it ended up being more of a night hike. Twelve of us drove in two cars and we met some students from Smith College at the Notch Visitor Center. We were 4 wide in the back! There were 16 of us total, a larger group than normal, but it worked out fine. We took the Robert Frost trail up but got a little confused at a couple of points because it dropped a few times briefly into minor gullies along the mountain's ridge. The hike was short and took only about 30 minutes each way. The summit featured views of UMass and the surrounding area lit up at night. We did some meditation which I really enjoyed which focused on listing and looking at the sounds and sights while remaining quiet and thoughtful. I never thought of it as meditation before but this is what I love to do whenever I get the chance in a group hike and especially when I hike alone. Fortunately, I had my own headlamp and Kieto had some to pass around. Gotta always be prepared! Looking forward to more hikes in the area and with UMOC! |
