Ascent Trip ReportGreat hike up Ampersand Mt. while staying with my parents on Church Pond. Started around 10:00am. Jake & Ben took off on their own ahead of us as they are faster hikers; we confirmed with hikers coming down periodically that they were seen and hadn’t killed each other. :) Dennis wasn’t feeling well about 1/2 way up but pushed through it. The rock scrambling near the top was a little tricky and required some planning- and praying. I don’t enjoy the steeper, bare open rock parts of summits where I have to depend on balance for my survival. I’m getting good at tree root-repelling on descents, though I wonder about the impact to the tree with so many doing it. The summit was open, expansive, and offers gorgeous 360 degree views. Ben summited with Jake, then hiked down to find us, hiked back up, then started to head down solo, changing his mind soon after- he’s a strong and independent hiker now that he’s 12 yrs. old. Jake was light and fast as always, even in his old sneakers. I needed many break to catch my breath but felt good, especially with a brace on my right knee. Wished I spent more time on the summit, but the boys had waited a while for us and were ready to go.
