Ascent Trip ReportIt was supposed to rain, so Danny and I did a smaller trip of OJI and Coe instead of the Brothers. As we summitted OJI we could see the weather clearing. Still, Danny was tired after a 11 mile 5,000 foot vertical day doing Baxter and the Knife Edge the day before but when the sun came out it was time to go for peak number 2 and one listed on the maine threshold 3.5k list.
Highlight for Danny was when we watched the wind push some low lying clouds over OJI and plunge them down in the saddle between us and our ascent up the slide of Coe. The winds then obliterated the clouds and we saw the water vapor evaporate so fast it was crazy.
I had read that the trip of Coe was not easy. True that. It is a bunch of moderate to steep slabs and highly coarse granite sand and you hike one mile up a slide. The slabs are very slippery and when wet with moss can send you to your butt quick. I was surprised that even some low slopes were dangerous in our hiking boots while other dry slabs you could ascend very steep slopes. The sand was like ball bearings on the slabs and would send you to the ground real quick as well.
We descided to make a break for the peak hoping no rain. If rain we were going to abandon as this was not an easy route in rain. An unmaintained slab slide scramble. The peak had rewarding views of the notch in the Knife Edge and of the Brothers. Doubletop Mountain beckens to be climbed someother time in the other direction.
We ate lunch and descended and quickly made our way back to the OJI TH. The dryer slabs going down the slide were actually quite fun in the afternoon.
