Ascent Trip ReportIt was a calm, August summer day as we ascended Ben Lomond via the North Ogden Divide trail. There was no wind even at the summit, only a mild breeze lower down the mountain on descent (which was nice, as it was fairly warm by the time we got back down to the trailhead).
The trail was well-maintained and easy to follow, and the scenery was beautiful. One thing I'd want to make sure other hikers are aware of, however, is how heavily this trail is used by mountain bikes and dirt bikes (at least during the dry summer months). I did know that motorized vehicles were allowed on this trail, I just was not aware of how popular it was for trail riders. On a busy Saturday in summer, we as hikers on foot were certainly the exception rather than the rule. I imagine this is due to the longer mileage and the gradual grade (it's only a little steep just below the summit).
Now, every rider we came into contact with was very kind and respectful (everyone went quite slow near us, for safety I'm sure and to keep dust and noise down, they communicated well, and were all extremely courteous), but it does change the nature of the hike if you're used to wilderness trails that you are sharing only with others on foot. The North Fork Park route (trailhead near Eden, UT) is closed to motorized vehicles.
