Ascent of Vlaggeduin on 2019-07-16
|Date:||Tuesday, July 16, 2019|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||121 ft / 36 m|
Ascent Trip ReportIn an attempt to confirm the identity of the highest point in South Holland, I used Netherlands LiDAR data (AHN3) to examine all of the dunes that appeared to be possible candidates. While Vlaggeduin is currently listed on Peakbagger as the highest point in the province, my analysis indicated that it actually the second highest point, behind the unnamed dune in the Duinrell amusement park. Maximum elevations for each point are as follows:
Vlaggeduin: 35.6m at N52.192620 E4.402954
Duinrell Hill: 37.0m at N52.144541 E4.375315
For Vlaggeduin, I parked in a free lot near a bunch of athletic fields, and made the easy 10-minute climb to the top. The high point is obvious, and is marked by what appears to be a blue-and-white painted bunker. I enjoyed the views of Katwijk, the North Sea, and various airplanes on their way in and out of Schiphol. In the distance, I could also see The Hague, Rotterdam, and Scheveningen.
