Ascent Trip ReportBaden Powell, Ross and Burnham Mts.
Total distance: 16.2 miles
Elevation gain: 5650 ft according to my GPS, 6100 ft as estimated by me
Total time: 10 hours 55 minutes
Start time: 7:15am
Trailhead: Vincent Gap
Accomplishments by list: HPS #46 and #47 for Ross and Burnham
Difficulty of hike: 9 out of 10. The most difficult part was the heat. In the 3 miles between Baden Powell and Ross, there is shade if you seek it out, but the majority of the route has no cover and is very hot. Besides that, this stretch was steep at times, but not technical, and route finding was not an issue. The PCT portion of the hike was much easier as well.
Views during the hike: 9 out of 10. The summits of Ross and Burnham both had more trees on them than the surrounding areas, so their views were limited. But the rest of the trails to those peaks, as well as the summit of Baden Powell, had excellent views of Baldy and its north backbone, the San Antonio Ridge and Iron Mountain, Rattlesnake Peak, Copter Ridge, Hawkins and Throop Peaks, and a view of the Mojave desert. And views of Baden Powell itself were excellent on the trail to Ross.
Climbing on the descent: Lots. After descending from Baden Powell for the first time, it's 200 or so foot climb to the summit of Ross. Then comes the 2,200 foot climb back to Baden Powell. Then, from the lowest point between Baden Powell and Burnham, it's about 200 feet more to the Burnham summit, followed by a 600 foot climb back to Baden Powell.
People seen on the trail: 6 people were on the summit of Baden Powell when I reached it the second time. 2 others were ascending from Vincent Gap on my way down. No one else seen on the trails to Ross or Burnham.
Animals seen: none.
I didn't find a register at either the Ross or the Burnham summits.
