Ascent Trip Report

#85 on the NH Fire Tower list. After bushwhacking Currier in the morning for #84, we headed to Gorham to climb a small peak I had wanted to get to for quite a while. It was reputed to be one of the best great-view-for-little-effort peaks, and it absolutely was! We took the shorter approach from Pinkham B Road. We parked at the Pine Link parking lot and headed down the Pine Mountain Road. The first 0.9 miles of our loop were on this road, which climbed a little and had a couple short descents as well. The real climb began when we turned onto the Pine Mountain Loop Trail. After a brief rocky ascent through the forest, the trail came out to the base of the impressive cliffs, and soon went out onto some ledges, with the first views toward the Presidentials. This side of the loop is quite steep with many scrambles as it works its way up alongside the cliffs. There are many places to stop and admire the view as you climb. As the trail gets higher, the views begin to include the Carter Range on one side and the central Whites on the other. The rugged climb culminates at the wide, sloping ledge at the top of the cliffs, which has the most spectacular views. There is a nice bench carved into the stone up there. The trail flattens out after that and leads across the flat, ledgy summit area for a while to a highpoint, where the old fire tower footings are. We continued on the loop trail across the summit, passing spur paths to three ledges with very fine views to the northeast. We returned by continuing on the loop trail back to the road and following that back down.
