Ascent Trip ReportFrom S, Altopiano del Montasio. 3h15 up via Rif Brazza, Forca del Disteis, well paintmarked scrambly trail via Pipans ladder, 2h down via ladder route, scree descent, path to Casere Pecol, road back.
After Grintovec, Montasio worked better than Triglav today for weather (Triglav tomorrow hopefully). Trailhead overnight, left 0635, road up to refuge, in cloud, soon cleared with fab views of Montasio and Kanin. Passed a Slovenian party and solo Italian, who like me was puzzled by trail fork at 2000m, 46.42766° N, 13.43429° E. Turns out it's a descent route, connects with scree above - keep L here on ascent. Brief scenic detour L to the dramatic Forca del Disteis, up ridge a little way then easy traverse path R reconnects with main path just before scrambling starts. Well marked route, NB in upper section when window comes into view, marked path ascends L then R, direct scree ascent less pleasant and prone to rockfall eg from the frequent and confiding ibex. In any event helmet recommended. No sign of snow noted by Petter and especially Lee during their mid July ascents
2 young Austrians at summit when I arrived. Tatty blockwork pillar beside cross the only potential trig found, held together with rebars, similar to pillar at Zirbitzkogel summit. Highpoint is small outcrop 10m E of cross. Went down with Austrians, as far as the ladder, where they continued presumably for the alternative descent. I stuck with Pipans. Just one climber ready to start up as I got down it. Often the case with ferratas, it's easier in descent. Scrambled down rest of route, at its foot I followed obvious footprints descending 200m of perfect scree to join the path noted earlier, rejoined main path at 2000m, kept R and descended to farm, then L on road back to trailhead. By now the upper half of the peaks was in cloud
