Ascent Trip Report1h30 to summit via main east ridge ferrata, with some queuing, 2h down with more queuing and brief flirtation with alternative route N to glacier. Ferrata feels about grade B or C. Note, arriving early am, toll road barrier was open and ticket machine not working. On way down the lady at barrier asked for my cable car ticket. This covers road toll.
Later than planned 0850 cable car, in poor visibility down past ice cave to find prepared path along top edge of glacier, descending then climbing to hut which I can't see, pick up boot trail R leading to foot of buttress and start of ferrata which I also can't see, follow boot trail up R involving brief needless crampon action before gaining busy ferrata a little further up. Find myself in large slow crocodile of klettersteigers, I'm the only one without ferrata kit or helmet. Thus a slow but fun hour to summit, highpoint outcrop near cross or sloping boulder 17m away. No view. I stay a little too long and get in the downward crocodile. Reaching a fork I take the L ferrata N which leads quickly and steeply to a messy but doable bergschrund. Beyond there's no trail, just steep snow, no visibility, no trail, no ice axe. Back up to main ferrata, this time folk decide an old guy descending rapidly with no ferrata kit is best let by, and I'm fairly soon down, last descent to snow particularly steep and interesting, with cable but not much for the feet. Boot trail leads quickly back to the busy pisted trail, and views at last, back for the 1300 cable car but not much time to spare. |
