Ascent Trip ReportSan Gorgonio Mountain
Total distance: 18.2 miles
Elevation gain: 5471 feet
Total time: 10 hours 11 minutes
Start time: 6:30am
Trailhead: Vivian Creek
Accomplishments by list: Six Pack of Peaks #6, HPS #44
Difficulty of hike: 8 out of 10. Not nearly as difficult as I was expecting, though not easy either. Not significantly more difficult than other Six Pack hikes.
Views on the hike: 7 out of 10. No views on the first half Vivian Creek. Eventually it opens up to Dobbs, followed by Dragon's Head, but not much more. Once at the top, views are good, though not as great as some others. Perhaps views were ruined by the incoming thunderstorm that chased everyone off the peak.
Climbing on the descent: none. Perhaps an extra 50-100 feet climbing the Northwest Slope of San Gorgonio, nothing other than that.
People seen on the trail: 15-20. I kept passing and being passed by a group of 3 other hikes on the ascent. Just before the summit, people started descending, about 6 of them. On the summit itself was another group of 4, besides the 3 I kept passing. I was the last off the summit, though one other hiker was heading up around Halfway Camp. Then 2 more backpackers passed in the last mile.
Animals seen: a pair of deer at the 2 mile marker. Closer one was about 5 feet away, and didn't run off.
This was a fairly standard hike up Vivian Creek. Alternating sections of steep ascent and flatter slopes, nothing too bad. Had to get off the summit quickly due to lightning in the area, then listened to lightning strike maybe 1/2 mile away on the descent, but it cleared up in about 20-30 minutes.
