Ascent Trip ReportRoad says "private road" but people along the way said it's not. Parked where sign was down the road. The only sign was for the canoe access, not for where to find trailhead (there is a map but I couldn't make head nor tail of it0. I asked a man with a canoe for the way to the trail to Mud Pond Mountain and he gave directions towards the canoe access and it was correct. Followed the road to the the trail gate, through nice wildflower lined wide trail, stopping at Mud Pond. At that intersections, there was a seasonal sign saying private for a couple months during the summer for scout camp. Looked like no one had been there (high grass, no sign of foot traffic). Plus someone else had signed the trail register two days before heading the the mountain. Got a mile or so further and spotted a big brown or black round furry object on the trail. I knew it was a bear, so stopped and prepared to back away and yell. It finally sensed my presence and ran into the woods. I backed away slowly, attached my bear bell and retreated back, so didn't chance going to the summit. Especially being solo. Spent time photographing the numerous butterflies, insects and wildflowers.
