Ascent Trip Report368. CoHP - BENZIE COUNTY, MICHIGAN
After the woods experience to reach Briar Hill at the top of Wexford County, I emerged to take on three much easier highpoints in the northern part the Lower Peninsula. First on the list was a visit to Benzie County, to be followed by the near-twins of Grand Traverse and Leelanau Counties.
I used the Schuler trip report to arrive at 20419 Stanton Road, an address noted on the mailbox that was seen at the road. The area was heavily wooded, and the home was not visible from the road. But as I drove up the driveway, I got a sense that no one was home. I parked near the house and walked left to a door on that side of the house. I knocked, and no one answered. My GPS said I was about 250ft away from my HP target, so I decided to go for it.
From the door, it was a quick trip behind the home and into the woods. I didn’t have to go very deep into the woods before my GPS and my eyes told me I had seen the highest ground. I returned to my vehicle, but this time went left around the house because that was a more direct route to where I had parked.
On my way back out the drive, as I got to Stanton Road, I was ready to turn left onto the road just as a large pickup was turning left onto the driveway. I rolled down my window and spoke with the driver and 3 other occupants. As I explained why I was there, the driver and others just chuckled as they confirmed that they were the homeowners. I was not the first highpointer they had encountered. We chatted briefly about several items, including my journey to the Konvention that was soon to be held in the Upper Peninsula. They confirmed their knowledge of the HP area, which they agreed was in the woods behind the swing set. That is the area I had just been to, and my HP visit was validated.
This family was pleasant to meet, and future visitors should not hesitate to make contact with them to visit their property and the Benzie County HP.
